2020-2021 Board Attendees:

Celebrations: 

  • Holiday basket raffle a success; one more basket to raffle!
  • Teachers given $100 each in Scholastic dollars, the rest to the library. Orders going out this week


Principal Update:

  •  Rosetta Stone - can we get a discount for Mandarin? Or Duolingo May help for students quarantining; Yes Chinese is hard to navigate 
  • Shifting to work towards A + and integrating it in the classroom. No steam night this year.
  • New Year’s One word challenge - 60 - 4x6 black frames - vote on this: 
    • Budget $90-110; Passed
  • Coffee Bean for Kids, by John Gordon - one book for each class to purchase for next year - vote on this:
    • Budget 
  • Fifth Grade cove needs water filler maintenance or replacement - Michelle Fortino thinks Dennis installed them, can district maintain them? If we order through company that district has an agreement with. 

 

Old Business:

  • New DCES Marquee - were trees trimmed? 
  • Front office complete - Will open when Middle school is in person; front office position interviewing for this week; can we make video tour? 
  • Chalk Board - if Pre school / Pre k is gardening there, maybe one of them can decorate the chalk board? (ask at pick up)

 

New Business:

  • Need 5th grade brick parent / 5th grade celebration - or drive through (Through 5th grade room parents) 
  • Do we want to create a new PTO logo? - ask Sarah Crawford for help
  • Long sleeve shirts are being ordered, sweatshirts are backordered 1 month - we need to let these families know, consider offering them size change, or if you need a refund. -Tara will email
  • Chinese New Year Celebration - consider online? Dragon in person?; Email with Mrs. Chen; has a budget; $800 for the 3 events for the year; Kiki to email
    • February 12th
  • Parking lot after school - kids running around in the desert, reminder to be safe

  • Replace shade cover at first grade cove wash stations - ideally done before March. Any other shade structures?  Shade sail at first grade cove - permission from it to go from awning to fence (will need to bring out Greg Skelton)
  • Shade structure at North Gate where teachers let people out. (Greg Skelton has suggestions for us here as well)
  • Look at buying 5th grade cove tree (on hold)

Celebrations: 

  • Teachers are thrilled with our Thanksgiving Pie tradition and the gift basket raffle
  • Golf tournament success

Principal Update:

  •  Teacher basket drawings - every day for 2 weeks. Mrs. Smith received the first one. 
  • Covid Case updates populate on susd.org/covid19 every Friday. If someone is in close contact with a positive case or in a class with a positive case they will be notified. Each case is very different. Streaming for quarantine cases; if 2 cases unrelated - that’s considered an outbreak and everyone will be notified. Close contact is sitting within 6 feet for 10 minutes.
  • New DCES School Marquee is up at north lot; will get training on how to add messages; the City of Scottsdale will trim the trees so it’s in view
  • Front office is ready to go - we can have a video tour done. Furniture being ordered. 
  • Principal letter last Friday; teachers and administrators juggling a lot re edl, quarantine, live teaching.. If a student is quarantining they can stream in. If your child is out for another reason they won’t do streaming. 
  • Next semester EDL will be at Echo Canyon
  • All classrooms have cameras for students quarantining for when school returns in January
  • CDC guidelines followed for both students and staff regarding quarantining with Covid. Close contact is within 2 days of symptoms or positive test. Currently still following 2 week quarantine guidelines. If a teacher is out sick, a sub will come in, but the sub can’t stream so another teacher may do some of the streaming

 

Old Business:

  • Carpool Parking spot was auctioned

 

 New Business:

  • 5th grade cove is losing their saguaro cactus, it’s leaning and will be taken down. So 

There will be a small fence there - plant a tree there from the 5th grade cove; 2 or 3 options the students could vote on approved by the district

 

VP Finance: Tara McConnell

  • We have $5,000 scholastic dollars
    • Vote on giving $100 to every teacher
    • Vote to give the balance to the library to total $4,000 between teachers and the library
    • Chase Account $55,529.56
  • PayPal account $17,186.89 (transferred into Chase today)
  • Golf tournament:
    • We raised $1050 for mulligans and raffle tickets
    • And $9000 for sponsorships and players
    • For a total of $10,050
    • Expenses so far $6203
    • Raising nearly $4K for the PTO 🎉

    • Chick fil A - Still waiting on total.  They have undergone staffing change in the fundraising position recently and will get back to me this week on totals from October and food credit from last year.  If fundraiser was successful, I will schedule another one for December.
    • Portillo's drive through - $125 
    • Papa Johns - $142 from recent fundraiser.  Maybe we should schedule these monthly.  They seem to be popular.
    • Reached out to NYPD Pizza to schedule the week of 12/14.  They give 20%.  Waiting to hear back.
    • Going to schedule Panera in January, they give 20%.

  •  Kinder Roundup Monday - Virtual
  • Board Meeting Tonight - have Alicia and Beth post; plans for EDL and SOL moving forward in January; commitment form this month.

  • Pandemic Needs bucket: the cases of water etc cost more than expected. This bucket is currently at $100, but needs to be upped to $230 to cover those expenses

    • - Read Naturally was funded for $700 but the total actually came to $740.72 Can we please vote to raise the budget for this item to $741?
    •  Brenda has requested additional items for Emergency kits. Each year, we usually replace the crackers and a gallon water bottle in the event of a lockdown. Since parents will not be able to drop off items once school is in session, Brenda has asked us to additionally supply a pack of individual water bottles for each classroom. We can either vote to increase the Emergency kit fund from $50 or we can do what we did last year and create a pandemic fund to cover these items which we wouldn't have in a normal school year.

Distribution Phase I - Successful Chromebook and edukit pick up! 

 

Principal Update:

  • ELD Learning – Zoom links (troubleshooting); there are requirements for synchronous asynchronous learning; if chromebook isn’t working/cord is broken, ok to contact office; also reach out to administration if having difficulty with EDL online; one live and one asynchronous time for specials each week. Microsoft Teams will be updated.
  • Distribution Phase II - library staff will take care of it, 2 days from 4-6pm
  • Curriculum Night (TBD)
  • Limited Appointment positions (Playground position filled); computer lab not needed yet. Consider giving hours to playground coordinator instead of to computer aid

Old Business:

  • Office Remodel - ongoing; Future meeting for shade structures, paint on entry wall

Principal Update:

  • District updates:
    • Each school gets a social worker 1 day a week-- the PTO could potentially fund separate days, maybe days evan Isn’t here
    • SUSD now has a lead psych for the district
    • Robinson will be Superintendent Liaison for DCES: 4 meetings a year
    • Kriekard to have coffee with Superintendent at each HS
  • Paint and flooring complete throughout campus
    • can we get swiffer vacuum push for classrooms
      • Will purchase 1 and see how it works
      • Want 1 per cove 
  • Entrance mural to be discussed this week with Dennis
  • Will introduce new AP before the start of Thursday curriculum night 
    • Will also have Maria give a little speech on partnerships/philanthropy
  • Evan will be here Tues/Thurs all day, and Friday afternoons 
  • 1st coffee with Kim is Tues Aug 13th 9:00 - Evan Tiras will be introduced
  • Need to make sure all board members have their volunteer status up to date

 

Old Business:

  • Legacy spending update:

  • Movement software for Sparks
  • Reading nook chairs for higher grades
  • Chalkboards in all coves—got the quote from SUSD and it turned out to be very expensive- cost prohibitive for this year - was going to be $450 per cove
    • Will put one big one outside the 4th grade cove
  • Carrying over $14k for this coming year

 

New Business:

  • Funding needs exploration for the following school year
  • MMR Golf Club event to benefit the DCES PTO – Morgan will need volunteers for the event—liability issues? 50/50 raffle
    1. August 17th
    2. Whose liability insurance would be on the hook 
    3. Will advertise via our website, social media, etc. 

Teacher Representative: Curt Robinson and Holly Hooley

  • Update on any Summer trainings? 
    1. Ms. Sparks and Mr. Sabol went to a social/emotional training
    2. Kim and some other teachers went from Delaware for Mandarin training
    3. Leopold, Ganser, and Hooley will be the trainers of trainers for Write from the Beginning
  • Any staffing changes other than the new AP? Evan Tiras, also at Laguna
    1. Mr. Rhodes is our new 5th grade teacher
    2. New 2nd grade teacher to replace Stein
    3. Ms. Chen is new Mandarin Teacher for 2nd grade
    4. Carlene new 3-4-5 Success teacher
    5. Lunch/recess monitors are filled (3 positions)
    6. Have yet to fill the recess aide

 

VP Finance: Tara McConnell

  • Need someone to do reimbursement
  • Budget Update: see handout
    1. Board members to review budget items, ask questions as needed
    2. Not set in stone, just set up so we don’t have to vote on every item we purchase throughout the year
    3. Will vote via email next week
  • Upcoming expenses
    1. Teacher allocation - will revisit the LRC staff’s allocation and potentially add it as a line item
    2. Will purchase a new bin for the playground toys

 

VP Sponsorships: Larry Antolik

  • Paw partnership update - vote 
    • Pros and cons of cost of premium package
    • Will be able to delineate for the tax deductible donation via the app for a receipt to the parents
    • Definition of PTO Membership: any donation to the PTO will give access to the directory, 
    • Will have flyer at Meet the Teacher night, in office, and will send home first week of school
      • Will send the PDF to Holly Hooley and Dave/Mary for the website

VP Special Projects: Melanie Martin

  • Garden program update
    1. Melanie met with teacher reps who will put together sample lessons
    2. Art Masterpiece model, 1 lesson per quarter
    3. Utilize garden as an outdoor classroom
    4. Plan to expand garden further to area adjacent to cafeteria (currently desert) -will triple garden space
    5. Irrigation will happen during Fall break, Planting after-- will need VOLUNTEERS
    6. Please email Melanie with any community partnership ideas
    7. Preliminary design presented to board 
    8. Requesting 5k from PTO budget
    9. Will continue the after school garden program
    10. Energy walk on campus - numbered signs within various gardens on campus
      1. Kiki to create art for walk
  • Garden Signage completed?
    1. Kiki to paint signs for the garden, much more cost effective than ordering signs

  • Switching from Tuesday Treats to Teacher Treats and will be coordinating for Early Release days to reduce cost
