SPC Updates Spring Conferences
3/4/2020 1:28 pm
Spring Conferences at many schools are student-led for a reason!
- Students prepare for their conference, build a portfolio and take time to reflect on their learning and progress
- This gives students additional "buy-in" on the importance of their education
- While every child builds their portfolio and prepares for a student led conference - not all parents attend. It's important to attend your child's conference. If you can't make the time work - see if you can schedule a different time with your child's teacher.
- Remember, children do better in school when parents are involved or volunteering at their child's school.
- Encouraging students to reflect on their learning and share with their parent/guardian helps validate their work and set future goals
SPC Updates February Nutrition Meeting
2/19/2020 12:37 pm
This month's SPC meeting was about wellness and nutrition. We had 7 DCES parents attend including Maria Bauman who spoke, and had two parents who wished they could attend and submitted questions instead. This is clearly a topic our school is interested in and we appeared to be the most represented school!
Our speakers included the Head of Nutrition Services, a parent representative from the SUSD Wellness Committee, a Nurse from Laguna and Master Gardener from Echo Canyon.Read More

SPC Updates August and September Meetings
9/30/2019 3:23 pm
Amanda Schlosser and Laura Weeshoff are Scottsdale Parent Council Reps this year. As your reps we are happy to bring any questions or concerns you have to SPC to address. We will submit them a week before the meeting and they will be brought up at the next meeting. If the issue or concern is felt by many, SPC may form a committee to discuss it further and come up with a solution.
September Meeting Review
Bryn DeFusco from Yes to Children provided information about the SUSD M&O Override vote taking place in October. This election is all by mail. All SUSD residents that are registered to vote by October 7th will be mailed a ballot. It is recommended that ballots be returned by mail no later than October 29th. It's imperative we start marketing to everyone in our community (including neighbors and retirees!) to remember to send in their ballots! Click here for more information from Yes to Children about the M&O Override. Please sign up to volunteer! Our volunteer opportunities can be found here.

As PTO Presidents, we get asked all the time, “What is the security situation for our campus? What can we do as parents?” We as parents of DCES students ourselves share your concerns! We wanted to find out more, and so this week Krista and I met with James Dorer, the Chief Security Officer for Scottsdale Unified School District along with Mrs. Mills, our DCES Principal, Evan Tiras, our DCES Assistant Principal, and Robert Akhbari, the Desert Canyon Middle School Principal. In addition to being our Chief Security Officer at SUSD, Mr. Dorer is a security expert, retired Scottsdale Police Officer and an adjunct instructor for the State of Arizona's Division of Emergency Management.
